Terminal 4 Elevator, Escalator and Moving Walkway Modernization

Scope

Upgrades to Terminal 4’s vertical and horizontal transportation infrastructure is underway with the modernization of Elevators, Escalators and Moving Walkways terminal wide. This project will consist of two phases, the first of which will continue though 2026 and update over 25 pieces of equipment, with the second phase completing an additional 19. Modernization work requires complete demolition of the existing equipment followed by construction and installation of brand-new units. The scale of this operation requires crews to work for several months at each individual site, with temporary constructions walls remaining in place through the duration of work.

Moving walkways can take up to six months to complete, due to the scale of the equipment and complexity of the systems involved. Additionally, the sequence of moving walkway replacements has been scheduled to complete one walkway after another, with the equipment being modernized being directly adjacent to the most recently completed walkway. The result being temporary constructions walls remaining present in any given transfer bridge for multiple years by time all pieces of equipment are complete. New walkways will provide users with an enhanced experience, shaving multiple seconds off of the previous equipment’s travel time.
